Over the course of my many years as a automotive technician I have been asked this question a lot usually by owners of older cars. The answer is usually no you should not put oil in a car while it is running for several reasons.

First and foremost it can be extremely dangerous. If the oil is not put in correctly it can easily splash back up into your face and eyes causing serious injury. It can also cause the oil to overheat and catch fire which is obviously a very big safety hazard.

Secondly putting oil into a car while it is running can cause serious damage to the engine. The oil can easily get into the engine’s combustion chamber and cause the engine to seize up. This can be a very expensive repair and in some cases can even require the engine to be completely replaced.

So while it may seem like a convenient way to top off your oil level it is really not worth the risk. It is much safer and easier to just turn off the engine wait a few minutes for it to cool down and then add the oil.
