Do Car Recalls Expire

According to Consumer Reports car recalls do not expire. “There is no time limit on a recall” says Crystal Wallace a spokesperson for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). “Once a recall is issued it’s in effect for the life of that vehicle.”

That said some automakers will limit the warranty coverage on recalled parts to a certain number of years or miles. That’s why it’s important to check with your automaker to see if your vehicle is covered by a recall—and if so for how long. “Even if a recall has been issued for your vehicle the manufacturer may no longer provide coverage if the recall period has expired” Wallace says.

If you have a recalled vehicle it’s important to get it fixed as soon as possible. Not only is it a safety hazard but if you wait too long you may not be covered by the recall anymore.

Have you ever had a recall on your car? If so did you get it fixed right away or did you wait until the coverage expired?
