The SS or Super Sport designation was first used by Chevrolet in 1961 on the Corvette and then the Impala. SS models were intended to be the most powerful and performance-oriented cars in the Chevrolet lineup. The SS badge was used on high-performance versions of Chevrolet’s mainstream models until the early 1970s when it was revived as a separate performance brand first on the second-generation Chevrolet Camaro and then on a handful of other models.

In recent years the SS badge has been affixed to a number of high-performance cars from other automakers. For example the Dodge Charger and Challenger both offer an SS model.

So what does SS stand for on a car? There is no one answer to this question as the meaning of the SS designation has changed over time. Today SS is often used as a generic term for a high-performance car regardless of the badge that is affixed to it.
