On April 15 1912 the RMS Titanic collided with an iceberg and sunk to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. The ship was carrying over 2200 passengers and crew members and only 705 people survived. Among the passengers were some of the richest and most famous people in the world as well as many poor immigrants who were hoping to start a new life in America.

So what happened to the car on the Titanic?

The Titanic was carrying over 3500 pieces of luggage including several cars. The cars were stored in the hold of the ship and they were all lost when the Titanic sank. However one car did manage to float to the surface.

This car was a Renault Type CMG and it was owned by Benjamin Guggenheim. Guggenheim was a millionaire businessman and he was traveling on the Titanic with his valet and mistress. When the Titanic began to sink Guggenheim dressed in his finest clothes and went to his cabin to await his death. His valet and mistress both survived the disaster.

The Renault Type CMG floated to the surface because it was lighter than the other cars in the hold. It was also filled with air which helped it to float. The car floated for two days before it was found by the rescue ship RMS Carpathia.

The car was brought to New York and it was put on display at Grand Central Station. After the car was put on display it was bought by a man named George Widener. Widener was the son of Titanic survivor Eleanor Widener. He paid $5000 for the car and he kept it in his garage until his death in 1955.

Today the car is owned by an anonymous collector. It is believed to be worth over $1 million.
