The first car Benz built was the Patent-Motorwagen or “car for invention.” It was a three-wheeled vehicle with an electric motor. The motor was located in the back and the car had a top speed of 10 miles per hour. Benz built 25 of these cars and they were sold in Germany and Europe.
The first person to drive a Benz was Bertha Benz Karl’s wife. In 1888 she took two of their children on a 104-mile trip from Mannheim to Pforzheim to visit her parents. This was the first long-distance trip ever taken by an automobile.
