As summer temperatures start to rise so does the risk of leaving your pet in the car. Pets can suffer from heatstroke in just a few minutes and it can be fatal. But what many pet owners don’t realize is that even if your pet survives the heat can still cause long-term damage.
One of the most common questions we get at the SPCA is “will fleas die in a hot car?”
The short answer is yes fleas will die in a hot car. But the risk to your pet is still great.
Fleas are attracted to heat so when they jump on your pet they are looking for a warm spot to hide. Once they’re on your pet they will start to lay eggs. The eggs will hatch and the fleas will start to multiply.
A single flea can lay up to 50 eggs in its lifetime so you can see how quickly the population can grow. And as the population grows so does the risk to your pet.
Fleas can cause anemia which is a dangerous condition where the body doesn’t have enough red blood cells. This can lead to weakness fatigue and even death.
Fleas can also transmit diseases to your pet such as the bubonic plague and typhus.
So while fleas may die in a hot car the risk to your pet is still great. We recommend keeping your pet cool and comfortable this summer by not leaving them in the car.
